Caregiving has its rewards, but it can be difficult in a variety of ways. There are some things that you can do to make the overall experience a little less difficult.
You Need a Plan
One of the best ways to make caregiving easier on you and on your senior is for you to have a plan. It’s tough to feel as if you have enough information to make an accurate plan, though. Collecting as much knowledge as you can helps and it also helps to remember that your plan doesn’t have to be detailed or set in stone.
Get Comfortable with Flexibility
You might also be concerned about the fact that plans often get dislodged, especially if your senior’s health is chaotic. That’s why you need a plan that’s also flexible. When you’re able to roll with the punches, that’s going to serve both you and your senior well.
Let Go of Needing to Solve Everything
You don’t have to fix or solve everything. In fact, there’s going to be a lot that you’re not going to be able to fix. Your job as your senior’s caregiver is to simply be there for her, support her, and handle whatever tasks you’re able to handle. When you can fully understand that you don’t have to be the one to fix everything, that takes a lot of pressure off of you.
You might feel as if there’s a lot going on just in taking care of your senior, but you have to also take care of yourself. If you’re not eating right, getting sleep, and staying physically active, it’s going to be difficult for you to have the mental and physical strength that you need to keep being a caregiver. Assess what you’re doing now and work out one or two small changes you can make that improve what you’re doing.
Get Help and Take Breaks
You might also be overlooking the fact that having help when you need it and taking regular breaks all factor in to making caregiving easier. If you don’t have reliable help from the people in your life, senior care providers are the answer you’re seeking. They can offer you more specialized help from people who understand what caregiving is all about and they can be there for you to be able to take time away.
Get in touch with what you need and with what your senior needs most. When you understand those two things, you can figure out the rest.
