Being a family caregiver isn’t just about making sure your senior has what they need when they’re at home. Instead, it is about helping them up to stay safe and healthy, and live their best life as they age in place. Sometimes that means stepping in and ensuring they get what they need in unexpected or potentially serious situations.
Going to the emergency room is something you don’t want your elderly loved one to have to deal with, but it is likely they will experience it at some point in their later years. You can help to make sure they not only get the most out of this visit, but are able to move on in a healthier way by being an advocate for them throughout the visit.
Some ways you can be an advocate for your senior during an emergency room visit include:
Make sure the doctor and medical team have all the information about your senior they need at all points in the process. This includes any allergies or sensitivities, Or anything about them that might influence how they should be approached or treated.
Ensure the medical team approaches your senior and interacts with them directly rather than talking about them or talking to you. This can be challenging if your senior is dealing with cognitive functioning decline or other similar issues, but even if you need to be the primary communication point, they should still show your senior respect and dignity.
Insist on appropriate tactics including washing or sanitizing their hands every time they enter the room, checking your senior’s name and chart information prior to any procedure, and giving you and your senior full information throughout the entire process.
Don’t hesitate to ask questions about everything that’s being done. If you’re senior or you don’t understand an element of their care, ask about it. Don’t stop asking until they get the information they need to feel confident.
Home care can be a tremendous asset after a trip to the emergency room. Whether your senior is dealing with an injury or an illness, a home care services provider can help your parent cope with what brought them to the emergency room, their recovery, and moving forward in a healthier way. This can mean handling tasks in the home to help them save energy, medication reminders, support making good lifestyle choices, companionship, and more.
