This is the perfect opportunity for you to reclaim this favorite meat from the fall and winter seasons and make it all about the summer months.

This recipe is for a rich, delicious, and definitively summery turkey chili. Filled with the flavors of smoky barbecue sauce, bright, sweet corn, and grill seasoning, this is the perfect hearty bowl for you to enjoy around a campfire with your family. It freezes beautifully, so feel free to make up an extra batch for your parent to enjoy with their home care provider later.
What You Will Need

  • 2 and 1/2 pounds of ground turkey or ground turkey breast
  • 3 tablespoons of extra virgin olive oil
  • 2 cups of corn kernels
  • 1/2 of a cup of smoky BBQ sauce
  • 1 can of tomato sauce (14 ounces)
  • 1 cup of beer
  • 2 large peppers of any combination of colors
  • 1 large onion
  • 3 tablespoons of hot sauce, with the spice level to your comfort
  • 2 tablespoons of Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon of cumin
  • 2 tablespoons of grill seasoning blend
  • 4 tablespoons of dark chili powder
  • Shredded cheese (smoked white cheddar, pepper jack, chipotle cheddar, Monterey jack, 5 peppercorn Cheddar or a combination of several)
  • Sliced canned jalapenos
  • Salsa
  • Sour cream
  • Chopped cilantro leaves
  • Chips (pita or tortilla, for dipping)
  • A large pot
  • A wooden spoon
  • A sharp knife
  • A cutting board

What to Do

  • Use the sharp knife to quarter and then chop the onion
  • Use the sharp knife to chop the cilantro leaves if needed and set aside
  • Place the pot over medium to medium high heat and add the olive oil
  • When the oil is hot, add the turkey meat
  • Season the meat with the cumin, grill seasoning, chili powder, hot sauce and Worcestershire sauce
  • Use the wooden spoon to break the meat up into small crumbles and mix in the seasonings
  • After browning the meat for about 5 minutes, add all but 1/4 of the onion to the pot
  • Chop the peppers using the sharp knife and add them to the pot as well
  • Cook for about 10 minutes
  • Add the beer to deglaze the pot
  • Scrape up the drippings while the alcohol cooks off
  • Add the BBQ sauce as well as the tomato sauce to the pot
  • Allow the pot to be brought to a bubble
  • Add the corn kernels to the pot
  • Reduce the heat to low and let the chili simmer
  • Allow to simmer for 10 minutes
  • Adjust the seasoning and heat level to taste
  • Remove from the heat
  • Serve with the shredded cheeses, sour cream, salsa, jalapenos or extra onion, or a combination, with the chips to use as dippers
