Recent studies have suggested that there is a link between what we eat and the development of Alzheimer’s. A study conducted at Lavel University in Quebec suggested that a diet high in omega-3 fatty acids and low in saturated fats may just decrease the risk of developing this currently incurable form of dementia. The test, conducted on mice, found that those who were fed a diet high in fat and low in omega-3s developed several increased markers for Alzheimer’s in their brain.
Another study, conducted at UC Irvine, revealed that Alzheimer’s prone mice that were fed large amounts of vitamin B3 in their drinking water performed well on memory and cognitive tests while those that did not receive the vitamin showed the cognitive decline associated with Alzheimer’s.
Diet and Your Elderly Parent
While this doesn’t mean that you should rush out and purchase large quantities of supplements for your elderly parent, it does illustrate the importance of diet. One diet that corresponds to these findings is the Mediterranean diet. This diet became popular when researchers discovered lower levels of chronic diseases as well as higher levels of life expectancy in the area of Crete, Greece and southern Italy. It is a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, fish, whole grains, nuts, seeds, olive oil and garlic. Fish provides the omega-3 fatty acids and whole grains are rich in vitamin B-complex.
The Mediterranean diet isn’t all about food; it also incorporates the lifestyle associated with this region. This includes leading a stress-free life, making meal time a relaxed occasion shared with good company and including physical activity into the daily life.
This diet has been shown to decrease cognitive decline and reduce the risk of Alzheimer’s, it also protects against type 2 diabetes and prevents heart disease and strokes.
Elderly Care Provider
If your elderly parent is suffering from the affects of Alzheimer’s or simply requires assistance with the daily activities of living, consider obtaining the services of an elderly care provider. They have cared for countless seniors facing numerous diseases and understand the unique needs that each condition brings. In addition to helping with bathing, dressing and light housekeeping, they also do the grocery shopping and return to prepare healthy meals that are then shared with your parent. They can accompany your parent on daily walks or provide the needed transportation to exercise classes. They offer support and companionship, helping your parent live a well-balanced life in their elder years.
